Did You Know?  

Terry Fox and Rick Hansen were friends who met while playing on the same wheelchair basketball team in B.C. It was Fox’s Marathon of Hope that inspired Hansen to embark on his Man In Motion World Tour in 1985. Rick Hansen and the Man In Motion Foundation sponsored the creation and installation of the Terry Fox Exhibit at the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Facts and Figures:
 
  • Rick Hansen was born in Port Alberni, B.C. and grew up in small towns in BC. He attended high school in Williams Lake, where he was a star athlete. When he was 15, he was involved in a motor vehicle crash, breaking his back and losing the use of his legs.
  • Hansen established the Rick Hansen Institute and Foundation to continue to raise funds for spinal cord research. The Institute has put the money into research, rehabilitation programs, education and awareness initiatives and wheelchair sports organizations across Canada and around the world
  • Hansen was named Newsmaker of the Year in 1986 by the Canadian Press.
